Lab scale experimental solutions

Test ideas. Validate solutions. Reduce risk.

What the laboratory delivers

CelSian's laboratory is more than a test facility; it’s a bridge between your production and the science behind it. With state-of-the-art analytical tools, custom test setups, and our seasoned experts, we uncover the causal relationships between batch, process, and product quality. Insights that help you make changes in raw materials, process settings, or recipes, without costly trial-and-error in production. Alongside our own operational experience, we supply reports with measurement data and films.

How we help

Support Decarbonization

Evaluate alternative raw materials, batch recipes and glass compositions to reduce CO2 emissions.

Identify Energy Requirements

With thermodynamic analysis and energy demand testing, we compare alternative raw materials and compositions to achieve a measurable energy requirement for melting.

Improve Glass Quality

Analyze flow and temperature uniformity to reduce defects and stabilize melting performance.

Turning Challenges into Measurable Results

Batch Cost Reduction

A glass producer experienced excessive foaming and blistering, resulting in higher production costs and increased waste. The solution was identified through targeted batch reformulation (supported by High Temperature Melting Observation (HTMOS) analysis), including the replacement of one raw material with an alternative source.

Impact:

🔹 16% reduction in batch cost

🔹 Improved melting stability

🔹 Cleaner, more consistent glass quality

Quality Improvement

A container furnace struggled with recurring blister defects and unstable melting behavior. Through High Temperature Melting Observation (HTMOS) laboratory trials and on-site support, adjustments to the redox balance and batch chemistry stabilized the operation.

Impact:

🔹 1% decrease in blister rejection

🔹 Enhanced furnace temperature stability

🔹 Improved production efficiency

Alternative Raw Materials to Improve Foam Control

A customer exploring new raw materials faced extensive foaming in the melting tank. Through High Temperature Melting Observation (HTMOS) lab trials, CelSian identified an optimized batch and/or glass composition and process condition.

Impact:

🔹 Major reduction in foam coverage (from full tank to near-throat area)

🔹 Noticeable improvement in glass quality

Faster Colour Change

Colour changes are a critical but often disruptive part of furnace operation, leading to production losses, increased cullet, and instability in glass quality. Even with established colour change programs, transitions can be difficult to control and optimize.

By combining simulation insight with laboratory validation and operational expertise, CelSian supports the development of tailored colour change strategies. This approach enables more accurate planning, smoother transitions, and better control over the process, while minimizing impact on furnace performance and lifetime.
